What is DevOps? DevOps is the combination of software development and IT operations, aiming to shorten the life cycle of systems development and continuously deliver high-quality software. This model of software development has grown since its inception, and the DevOps community is constantly searching for a way to continue growing the field. Like with all things, the more something develops, the more we’ll see trends to expect in the coming years, and DevOps is no exception.

Here’s what we can expect from DevOps development in 2021.

Infrastructure Automation (IA)

Infrastructure Automation lets teams design and automate delivery services through on-premise and cloud setups. We’ll likely see this continue to grow over the next year, letting DevOps teams perform infrastructure automation more reliably. This tool is extremely beneficial to DevOps teams: it offers multi and hybrid cloud infrastructure, supports immutable and programmable infrastructure, eases experimentation, and more.

Companies will likely start replacing their custom setups with enterprise-level IA tools, letting them gain faster deployments, consistent and repeatable infrastructure, and more.

Complex Toolchains

Toolchains are toolsets that support pipeline activity. When a well-designed toolchain is available, DevOps team members can work together with common objectives, precisely measure metrics, and get fast feedback on all code changes. DevOps toolchains are becoming more and more complex as time goes on, and CI tooling is evolving in a way that makes maintaining and building scripts easier than before. With these developments, toolchain vendors will be able to offer broader solutions across the industry, while companies will have more than one toolchain for support.

DevSecOps

Cloud computing is becoming much more popular and used in the world, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic sent us all into lockdown, so cloud-native security is more critical than ever to protect all of that information. The increased need for security means that DevOps teams will need new tools to protect their assets, leading to the potential adoption of DevSecOps in 2021. DevSecOps integrates security and compliance testing into development pipelines, letting it integrate into the tech’s life cycle, provide transparent results to stakeholders, and provide security protection at runtime.

DevSecOps is becoming more programmable each day, so a higher level of its usage is expected over the next year.
